Completed in 2019 by Lendlease Australia, the Marie Reay Teaching Center is the jewel in the crown for the Australian National University, Canberra. The whole 6 storey build is a timber construction masterpiece. Comprising of European Spruce pine for the Core and Bracing elements along with Tasmanian Oak for the stair treads, risers and handrail. The Truss Joint managed to cap it all off with 23 custom made exposed trusses designed and manufactured from Australian GL17 Glulam provided by Hyne Timber.
The trusses were designed to clear span 14.5m using select grade GL17 Glulam timber and structural steel plate and bolted connections. The team worked closely with Lendleases in house timber engineers and BVN architecture to help deliver a seamless installation.
Truss Facts:
- Total Weight of 11,740kg (includes truss timber, Plates & Brackets)
- Large Span Trusses were 611kg Each
- Approx 1700 Bolts were used
- Fixing Screws / Approx 2525 Were provided for fixing of custom brackets to perimeter and spine beams
- Additional – 855lm of 130×85 select grade Gl17 supplied for purlins between trusses.
- Truss installation took approx 2 weeks which includes pre-fitting brackets and installing purlins between trusses.
Additional timber routing was undertaken along each bottom chord and to the inside of each internal web for the installation on concealed LED lighting.
